How To: {Temporarily} Cure a Restless Soul

We live in an amazing time. There are people younger than me who are traveling the world with all of their belongings in a backpack. They're couch surfing their way across the seven continents and living amazing lives. When they're old and gray, they'll have the most sensational stories to tell their grandkids.

Now, while we'd all love to live that life, it just isn't possible for some of us. Me being one of them. While other 20-somethings are living off an artist's salary in France, or surfing the biggest waves in Australia, or eating fresh sushi in Japan, I'm here, in Podunk, Texas, wiping snot from my child's nose and only "going to town" once a week. Don't get me wrong, I love my life, but it can get a bit boring at times. I wouldn't give it up for anything in the world, but it would be nice to be able to pack my little family up and just go.

So, I wanted to find a way to somehow experience that life. While I may never actually go to London, I can get a taste of it, right? Once I figured out how to {temporarily} cure my restless soul, I wanted to share with y'all!

Do Your Research

Where are you wanting to travel to? I have a slight obsession with India, and I'd love to go there, but I probably never will. So what's a girl to do? How about learning about where you want to go? Study the facts, learn the landmarks, submerge yourself in their culture. There a million books and websites about any given subject, so I'm willing to bet you could read about wherever you want to go for days, weeks, or even months! Become a know it all of your favorite country. And after you've learned everything you can, spin a global and pick a new place to learn about!

Live Vicariously

There are tons of bloggers that live in amazing places! Find blogs who's authors are living in places you'd like to visit. Most likely they're going to talk about their home and post photos. I'd love to live in Louisiana, but it isn't possible right now, so I live vicariously through my girl Michelle from Dixie Lust. Find a blog, and start reading! You can even find folks on Instagram that are traveling and posting photos along the way! Find someone to follow, whether they're a blogger, instagrammer, or both, and settle in to make the trip with them.

Travel in Your Area

For whatever reason, you can't travel the world, but you can travel around you. I live in the second largest state in the US, and there is a ton to do here! Just within a two hour radius of me I have zoos, museums, SeaWorld, the Alamo, amusement and water parks, not to mention tons of festivals. There are things to do around you that you've probably never done before. Maybe you can't travel to Paris to see the Eiffel Tower, but what about traveling to Vegas to see the one there? Cheesy, yes, but still fun.

Make Friends

With social media these days it's insanely easy to have friends all around the world! I have friends living in London, Canada, and Germany, just to name a few. Again, it's easy to find these folks through blogs and twitter. You're on social media for a reason, so be social! Strike up a conversation, ask them about where they live, suggest being pen pals. Who wouldn't love getting snail mail from a place they've never been before!?

I know that this list doesn't really get you to the places you want to go, but it gives you a taste, which can definitely help when the wanderlust bug bites!

Where are you longing to visit?

Whoot whoot, Germany! I think this is a phenomenal idea. And it can even go both ways; although I'm so beyond thankful that we have this opportunity to travel around Europe, I often miss home and hate the fact that important things are happening while I'm away. Example, my brother graduates high school this year, and I am going through slide show after slide show pretending I'm there.
Heads up, heading to Spain in August. And Budapest this fall. Keep your eye out for awesome sites ;)

The big three in Europe (as I like to call it) have always stood out to me - London, Paris, and Rome, but then who could resist the coastline of Spain, France, Italy, and Greece. Working for an international company, my fingers are crossed that I might be so lucky!

You know, I suffer from the exact same problem-- I'm having it right now! I look on Facebook, and I see people taking their families to the beach, to DC, to London, and all the rest. It's not in the cards for us this year, with buying a house and all. It makes me have the wanderlust!

We should do some type of blog circle where we explore our neck of the woods, and post it, so that everyone can have a little taste of travel, at the very least! Although, we'll all have to bring our own umbrella drink of choice...

You make great points. There is so much to explore right in our own back yards. Play the tourist. Explore your city or capital like you're seeing it for the first time. You may be pleasantly surprised. As for my own wish list, the better question is, what's not there? I want to see as much as time and money allow. Great post, J. I just love your blog. :-)
